Pet Sitters International promoting safe pet-sitting practices this Pet Sitter Safety Month™

May marks the sixth annual observance of Pet Sitter Safety Month, created by Pet Sitters International.

KING, N.C. (April 27, 2022) — Pet Sitters International (PSI) is encouraging professional pet sitters and dog walkers to take a close look at their company policies this Pet Sitter Safety Month™—and review PSI’s safety tips—to ensure their companies have procedures in place to keep both pet sitters and pets safe.

This May is the sixth annual Pet Sitter Safety Month. PSI, the world’s largest educational association for professional pet sitters, created this annual observance in 2017 to highlight the importance of promoting safe practices for today’s professional pet sitters and dog walkers.

“Professional pet sitters and dog walkers have long prioritized safety in their pet-sitting businesses,” said PSI President Beth Stultz-Hairston, “but the month of May—the gateway to the busy summer pet-sitting season—is the perfect time for business owners to take a fresh look at their company polices to ensure they have best practices in place to promote safe pet sitting.”

As COVID-19 restrictions continue to ease and vacation travel rebounds, many pet-care businesses are finding requests for services exceeding pre-pandemic levels and anticipating their busiest summer in years.

“As pet-sitting and dog-walking business owners navigate this influx of requests and busy schedules again, it’s important they focus on their company’s safety procedures and ensure that their staff have been trained on these as well,” Stultz-Hairston continued. “Training should include basic safety precautions pet sitters and dog walkers should practice, from taking steps to prevent dog bites to taking precautions when arriving at clients’ homes.”

Throughout May, PSI will highlight various safety-related topics for pet sitters online. Pet sitters and dog walkers can visit the Pet Sitter Safety Month section on petsit.com to access safety tips and resources for professional pet sitters, including a free Pet Sitter Safety Guide. PSI members will also have access to additional safety resources in their Monthly Member Toolkit, including their exclusive monthly Facebook Live training.

“More than three decades ago when I started pet sitting, there were no pet-sitting specific resources available to me,” said PSI Founder & CEO Patti Moran. “That’s why it has always been so important to me that PSI provides members with easy-to-access tools that enable them to provide excellent pet-care services safely, and with confidence.”
