Pet Sitters International encourages pet sitters to review protocols this Pet Sitter Safety Month™
May marks the fifth annual observance of Pet Sitter Safety Month, created by Pet Sitters International.
KING, N.C. (May 3, 2021) — May marks the fifth annual Pet Sitter Safety Month™, and Pet Sitters International (PSI) is encouraging pet sitters to review their procedures and PSI’s safety tips to ensure they are taking precautions to keep themselves and the pets in their care safe.
PSI, the world’s largest educational association for professional pet sitters, created this annual observance in 2017 to highlight the importance of promoting safe practices for today’s professional pet sitters and dog walkers. This year, safety is especially on the minds of pet sitters and dog walkers following the brutal attack of Lady Gaga’s dog walker, Ryan Fischer, and the theft of her dogs.
“As an educational association, our goal is to ensure pet sitters and dog walkers have the tools and resources they need to successfully operate their businesses, and that includes information on the latest safety best practices,” said PSI President Beth Stultz-Hairston.
“Professional pet sitting or dog walking is a rewarding and profitable career,” she continued, “but as with any profession, there are basic safety precautions pet sitters and dog walkers should take.”
Throughout May, PSI will highlight various safety-related topics for pet sitters online—from the types of pet-sitting assignments pet sitters should turn down to tips for preventing pet bites and scratches.
This year, Pet Sitter Safety Month also falls during the ongoing COVID-19 crisis. While many areas around the globe are seeing improvements, PSI encourages pet sitters to continue taking steps to protect themselves, their clients and their businesses.
“Professional pet sitters have long prioritized sanitation practices for their businesses,” Stultz-Hairston said. “During the past year, they have implemented additional precautions and new services to meet the needs of pet parents in this changing landscape, all while keeping them safe."
To further assist professional pet sitters this May, PSI has published a Pet Sitter Safety Month section on petsit.com which includes a listing of safety tips and resources for professional pet sitters, as well as special offers for the month of May and a new free Pet Sitter Safety Guide.
