There's No Place Like Home
My dad was an avid dog lover. All dogs gravitated to him like Winnie the Pooh to honey. His dogs, other people's dogs, and even stray dogs. Didn't matter. Dogs loved Daddy! Since I grew up with canine brothers and sisters, I learned a lot from Dad about their care and dogs in general, discovering all I could about each one's unique personality. Our dogs were members of the family and treated as such. So much love! I'm so passionate about dogs that I'm inclined to rescue them all. But since that's not realistic, I have always thought that, upon retirement, I'd enjoy helping folks care for their dogs' needs when they couldn't. Dogs I've owned were always current on their city licenses and vaccinations. Medical needs were always addressed as they arose, and we groomed during the summer months. We are huge on play and cuddling, bedtime snuggles, and lots of silly talk. Oh, and baby puppy breath? Love it! Kisses allowed.
I owned 3 dogs who have since passed away from living long full lives with me - 2 dachshunds and a papillon mix (Liesl, Faye, Gracie); 1 stray cat (Kitty); and 4 parrots (budgie, Flash; cockatoo, Coco; and 2 amazons, Buster and Joey). My new best friend (2022), Micah, is a Meyer's Parrot, 3 years old, and very sweet. I take him with me whenever I hit the road. Flash lived a full happy life. Buster was a rescue who was an ill baby bird when I adopted him. I took him to an avian veterinarian who diagnosed him with psittacosis and instructed me on how to give him his medication injections. The doctor said his illness would likely mean a shorter lifespan, and although that turned out to be just 15 years, those were happy years for both of us. I placed Coco and Joey (both healthy and happy birds) with adoption agencies. This decision came during a time when it became necessary to devote more time to my two children's needs. This created a dilemma for the birds, also with important needs, and so I called on professionals to help me get them placed in quality homes. As a child, we had numerous dogs and cats and some freshwater fish. During college, we had a 55-gallon reef aquarium.
Our small-town community is in the final planning stages for a dog park. Construction is complete and we are waiting for the water appliances to install in the spring or summer of 2022. Equipment resembling an agility course may also be added. With three of us on the planning committee, we held our first meeting in June 2020. A grant was bestowed upon the project in November 2020. Meetings will resume regularly until everything to be placed inside/outside the enclosures is complete. Afterward, I will be routinely checking over the park and restocking the bag dispenser. Making it happen as promised!
