About My Business

Girl Next Door Pet Care Services serves the New River Valley (Go Hokies!) by providing quality and professional pet care for your furred, feathered & scaled family members. Solely owned and operated by Virginia Tech alumna Raven Gray-Scruggs, Girl Next Door Pet Care Services focuses on keeping your pet(s) healthy and happy while you are away. Raven has a passion for animals and more than a decade of hands-on animal care (vet, pet store, zoo and personal) experience with dogs, cats, reptiles, fish and small (companion) animals.

While Girl Next Door is a new business, Raven is no stranger to the New River Valley nor to what it takes to provide quality pet care, and her resume speaks for itself. Raven moved to the NRV from the Northern Neck of Virginia to pursue a career as a veterinarian. While studying Veterinary Business Management at Virginia Tech, she volunteered at Reston Zoo (Vienna, VA) and North Main Small Animal Clinic, worked as a Kennel Assistant at Radford Animal Hospital, and worked in the Business Office for both the small and large animal departments at the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine. In 2011, Raven graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Agribusiness and a Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Sciences, and minors in Animal & Poultry Sciences and Biology. After graduating, Raven became a Pet Care Specialist at PetSmart, providing care to the animals as well as helping pet parents with solutions for their pets. Since August 2017, Raven has worked for Spectrum Brands, a consumer products company that specializes in pet, home and garden products. Raven decided veterinary school was not the path she wanted to follow but found that pet sitting enabled her to express her passion for animals, so Girl Next Door Pet Care Services was born.

Raven is gentle, agile, bright, and pays great attention to detail. As a result, much of Girl Next Door’s business comes from referrals from satisfied customers and their humans, so hiring other like-minded and reliable pet sitters is on the agenda. Currently, Girl Next Door offers services that include--but are not limited to--pet sitting, house sitting, dog walking, sleepovers, poop scooping and pet-related cleaning. Raven loves the pets she cares for, and their humans! With her experience and knowledge of veterinarian-recommended care, she can maximize quality care and recognize warning signs of a sick, injured or frightened pet. As a result, Raven can neutralize any threats to your pets’ well-being and prevent and/or minimize pet-related emergencies.

What pets do you have?

Raven (R): My family includes my rescue dog Xena, my bearded dragon Manny, my ball python Phantom, and a host of tropical fish.

What is your favorite dog breed?

R: I don’t have a favorite dog breed, but I am partial to pit bulls because they are mistreated and misunderstood more than any other brand, and my sweet Xena—who was found in a dumpster—is a pit mix.

Dogs or cats?

R: Dogs and cats come with their pros and I can’t think of any cons, so I will say both! I have a dog in my family, but I am really pondering adding a cat (or two) to the family.

Favorite pet sitting gig:

R: I really enjoy pet sitting during Virginia Tech football and basketball games. To be able to provide that service so pet parents can support the Hokies is truly my pleasure! I miss attending the games, but pet sitting makes it worthwhile.
