PSI highlights career potential in pet sitting during 31st annual Professional Pet Sitters Week™
March 2-8 is the 31st annual Professional Pet Sitters Week™, and March 5 is Thank Your Pet Sitter Day™. Both observances were created by Pet Sitters International.
KING, N.C. (February 27, 2025) — March 2-8 is the 31st annual Professional Pet Sitters Week™, a celebration created by Pet Sitters International (PSI) to honor professional pet sitters and dog walkers and highlight the viability of professional pet sitting as a career.
With 51% of U.S. employees looking for a new job, according to Gallup, and employee satisfaction at a record low, many pet lovers in other industries may be dreaming about pursuing new careers. PSI is reminding would-be entrepreneurs that there are more resources than ever before for starting your own professional pet-sitting or dog-walking business.
“More than four decades ago when I started pet sitting, there were no pet-sitting specific resources available to me,” said PSI Founder & CEO Patti J. Moran. “I had to start from scratch, but today’s pet sitters have access to a wealth of educational and business resources to help them start and grow their businesses.”
PSI, the world’s largest educational association for professional pet sitters and dog walkers, created Professional Pet Sitters Week in 1995, and in 2023, the organization added Thank Your Pet Sitter Day™ as a dedicated day for pet parents to express their gratitude to professional pet sitters and dog walkers. The day always falls on the Wednesday during Professional Pet Sitters Week, so the 3rd annual Thank Your Pet Sitter Day is March 5 this year.
“Professional pet sitting has long been a profitable and rewarding career option, and with 82 million U.S. households now owning a pet, the need for professional pet sitters will continue to grow,” said PSI President Beth Stultz-Hairston “Using a professional provides pet parents with peace of mind that other pet-care options cannot.”
According to PSI’s 2024 State of the Industry Survey results, PSI member businesses are more profitable than ever. The average gross revenue for PSI member businesses in the U.S. was $100,537 in 2023, up from $94,563 in 2022. The average 2023 gross revenue for Canadian pet sitters was $100,764 CAN, up from $91,909 CAN in 2022.
The association encourages pet parents to express their gratitude for their pet sitter or dog walker during Professional Pet Sitters Week and share how professional pet-care services have made life better for them and their pets.
“With the growth of the professional pet sitting industry, pet parents do not have to rely on untrained or unwilling friends, family members or neighbors when work or travel keep them from their pets,” Moran said. “Knowing that a beloved pet can get expert care in the stress-free environment of its own home can provide great peace of mind for pet parents, and that is something to celebrate.”
Pet parents can visit www.petsit.com/locate to search for a PSI member pet sitter in their area and to download a free pet-sitter interview checklist, which lists seven important questions pet owners should ask any potential pet sitter or dog walker.
