PSI salutes our military veterans

On November 11, Veterans Day is celebrated across the United States. In recognition of this importance national observance, PSI salutes all of our members who have served in the military prior to becoming professional pet sitters. We'd also like to thank and acknowledge our professional pet-sitting members who are spouses or partners of those who are serving or have served in the military.

The November/December 2015 issue of Pet Sitter's WORLD, PSI's member magazine, included an article detailing the experiences of eight PSI members who served in various branches of the military. As we celebrate this day and all of our members who have served, we are also making this article availabe online.

Read "PSI Salutes Our Military Veterans" from the November/December 2015 issue of Pet Sitter's WORLD.

Thank you for your service! If you were in the military before becoming a professional pet sitter, or if you are a military spouse or partner, comment below. We'd love to hear your story!

I enlisted in the Air Force after High School.
I was an Aur Traffic Controller until my honorable discharge in 1982 so I would be able to raise our family

I served in the Air Force after college, then was blindsided by medical problems that required me to resign my commission. My service was in the late 60's Vietnam years and my late husband served in the Korean War. When he passed away in 1993 and I became a single wage earner so I started my pet sitting career part time, then full time after being put on disability in 1997, for which I am still addicted to working with pets. Despite physical limitations and renal cancer surgery (twelve hours including two hours on heart bypass) earlier this year, I have had to return to part time status. I have experienced improved emotional healing because of my connection to dogs, my two and clients' pets. May my future be as fulfilling as the last 18 years. Unfortunately since I missed out on the first half of this year during recuperation from cancer, I only have few of my former clients that have returned. I'm less busy but the setback has helped me rest and recuperation despite loss of income. But I'm cancer free which trumps my career situation.

Both my husband and myself were active duty Marines. We deployed together 3 times during my enlistment. He retired in 2014 and I ended after my first enlistment so I could grow my family without having to leave them behind during deployments (Helicopter electrician with a regular deployment schedule). It was a great experience and one that I miss because of the family it created, but I learned a great deal from my brothers and sisters in arms and I am forever grateful.
